Product Information
Specification
Imperial Russia: St George’s Cross III Class.
Numbered 305604.
Marked БМ (for “White metal”).
The Cross was founded by Tsar Alexander I in
1807 in a single class and was awarded to NCOs
and soldiers for bravery in the field.
Tsar Alexander II amended the Cross, in 1856, to
a 4 classes award.
A person would initially receive the 4th class and
would subsequently be promoted to higher
classes for further acts of bravery.
The 3rd Class of the Cross was initially struck in
0.99 silver, however since 1916 the crosses were
made in “white metal”, like this example.
A total of 289.000 Crosses of 3rd class were
awarded during WW1, but only 49,500 in white
metal (№ 289.151 to № 338.650).
The Cross was abolished in 1917 following the
Bolshevik Revolution.
The genuine Crosses are very rare.
