Latvia: Commemorative Medal for the Latvian War
of Liberation, 1918 - 1920.
On the obverse: An arm holding a sword, the 3
stars of Latvia, with laurel and oak branches on
the left and right. Inscribed "1918 PAR TEVZEMI
1920" (For the Fatherland, 1918-1920).
The "swastika" on the sword has no relation to
the NAZI regime - it is in fact a geometrical
symbol and religious icon, common in many
cultures of Eurasia from the ancient times.
The medal was instituted in 1922 to be awarded
to Latvian citizens who served in the National
Army and fought against the German Freikorps
and the Bolsheviks during the War of Liberation
(18 Nov. 1918-11 Aug. 1920).
The medal is hard to find.
