Imperial Germany - Duchies of Schleswig & Holstein: Commemorative 
Cross of the Army of Schleswig Holstein, for the War Years 1848 - 1849. 
In iron. 
The Cross was instituted by the provisional Government of Schleswig 
Holstein in Jul. 1850 to be awarded to the Army of Schleswig Holstein 
for the War against Denmark (1st War over Schleswig Holstein 1848-1852). 
It was made of iron from the cannons of the Danish Ship of the Line
 "Christian VIII", which was destroyed at Eckernforde in Apr. 1849. 
The Army of Schleswig-Holstein never exceed the 3000 men, so this 
is a very rare award.
Sidenote: Denmark won the 1st War over Schleswig Holstein, the 
Duchies however were annexed by Prussia, following the 2nd 
Schleswig Holstein War (1864).
