Imperial Germany- Saxe Meiningen: WW1 Medal
for War Merit. rare early bronze example on its
original combatants’ ribbon, mounted in the rare
lady’s bow format for female recipients.
The later examples were made in war metal (zinc
alloy) due to the reservation of bronze for the war
industry.
The medal was instituted in 1915 by Duke
Bernard III and was awarded to NCOs and other
ranks for military merit in front of the enemy.
Only about 24,000 medals awarded in total.
