Bronze Commemorative Medal for Combatants, 
for the Victory against France during the 
Franco-Prussian War of 1870 - 71. 
The medal was instituted in 1871 by Kaiser 
Wilhelm I and had been struck in bronze from 
French captured cannons. 
Obverse side: "Dem siegreichen Heeres" (To 
the Victorious Army). 
Reverse: The Iron Cross and the years 1870 
1871. 
Privately made example, without the 
inscription "AUS EROBERTEM GESCHUETZ" 
(From captured Cannons) on the rim.
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870 was fought 
between the 2nd French Empire and the 
German states led by the Kingdom of Prussia.
After a series of German victories (Battle of 
Sedan, Siege of Metz), Emperor Napoleon III 
was captured, the 3rd French Republic was 
declared, the French army was decisively 
defeated and the Germans besieged and 
entered Paris.
