The National Defense Medal was created in 
1982, in 3 grades (Bronze, Silver, Gold). 
It rewards particularly honorable service 
rendered by military personnel for their 
participation in operational activities. 
The qualification for the award of the medal 
is linked to both time service criteria as well 
as to personal achievements that are recorded 
as points.  
For the bronze class,  the requirements are 1 
year of service and 90 personal points.
Civilians can also qualify for the award under 
certain circumstances (killed or injured in the 
line of duty or for honorable services of high
importance to the defense of France)
