The medal was instituted in 4 classes (for 5,
10,15 and 20 years of service) in 1956. 
It was suppressed in 1990.
On the obverse: The flag of the German 
Democratic Republic (DDR) and the Red Flag. 
Circumscribed "Fur Treue Dienst, Nationale 
Volksarmee" (For Loyal Service, National 
People’s Army)
On the reverse: The Coat of Arms of the 
German Democratic Republic circumscribed 
"Fur Den Schutz Der Arbeiter Und Bauern 
Macht" (For the Protection of the Workers 
and the Power of the Farmers).
The medal is rare in its 1st class.
