Austro-Hungarian Empire: Patriotic WW1 Cap
Badge for the "Defense of Tirol".
With the portrait of Kaiser Franz Joseph, dated
1915.
The WW1 "Defense of Tirol" (or the Italian Front,
or the Mountain War) was a series of battles at
the border between Austria-Hungary and Italy,
fought between 1915 and 1918.
In the outbreak of WW1 Italy declared neutrality,
despite being a member of the Triple Alliance
alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary since
1882.
In 1915, Italy surprisingly declared war on
Austria-Hungary, entering WW1 on the side of
the Allies, aiming to the annexation of the
Austrian Littoral and northern Dalmatia, Trento
and South Tirol, through a surprise offensive.
The Austro-Hungarian defense however soon
turned the operations into trench warfare, very
similar to the Western Front, but at high
altitude, with very low temperatures.
A rare cap badge.
