The assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-
Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie,
Duchess of Hohenberg, occurred on 28 June
1914 in Sarajevo. They were shot and mortally
wounded by Gavrilo Princip a member of a
group of 6 assassins (5 Serbs and 1 Bosniak)
coordinated by Danilo Ilic, a Bosnian Serb and
a member of the Black Hand secret society.
Following the Assassination Austria-Hungary
issued on 23 July 1914 the "July Ultimatum"
to the Government of Serbia and declared
War on 28 July 1914, initiating thus the Great
War.
