Greece: Officer's Cross ("Gold Cross" - gilt)
of the Royal Order of the Phoenix.
This is the 4th Class of the Order.
The Order of the Phoenix was instituted in
1926 to replace the Royal Order of George I.
Initially it was awarded (like all Orders of that
period) only to Foreigners for meritorious
services to the Greek State.
Following the restoration of the monarchy, in
1935, the Order was renamed to the "Royal
Order of the Phoenix" and was amended with
the addition of the Crown and of the respective
Royal cipher.
Additionally, Greek citizens could ever since
qualify for the award as well.
The Order is still in use today (without the
Crown) for outstanding military merit and
also for merit in the fields of arts, letters,
science, commerce, industry and public life.
This example with the Royal cypher of King
Paul I (since 1947) was awarded for merit
during WW2 and the Greek Civil War (1945 -
1949).
Greek made example.
