Greece: Royal Order of the Redeemer, Knight's
Cross, 5th Class.
In its box of issue.
High quality example by the French House of
Lemaitre, Paris.
The Order was established in 1829 by the 4th
National Assembly of the Hellenes, in Argos, in
order to reward those who had fought for and
supported the War of independence.
Its issuance started by Royal Decree of King
Otto in 1833.
This form was introduced in 1863, following the
amendment by King George I, that replaced the
portrait of King Otto by the Icon of Jesus Christ
the Redeemer.
The Order is awarded to "distinguished Greek
citizens who have defended the interests of the
Country in War time or who have rendered
highly exceptional social services in Greece or
abroad".
It remains the Highest Honor of the Hellenic
Republic in its new form since 1974 (without the
crown).
