Imperial Germany - Duchy of Saxe - Altenburg: WW1 Bravery Medal. 
Early example in bronze.
The medal was instituted, by Duke Ernst II, in 1915 and was issued to 
NCOs (non commissioned officers) and other ranks for outstanding 
and exceptional bravery in the field. 
The recipients of the medal could either be personnel of the 8th Infantry 
Division/153rd Thuringian Infantry Regiment or citizens of the Dutchy 
that were enlisted in other Units of the Imperial Army or Navy.
This is the rare 1st example of the medal - in bronze - that was 
issued until 1916. 
The medal was originaly struck on bronze, in 1916 it was struck on 
coppered zinc and in 1918 on zinc as copper was reserved for the 
war effort. 
Only 520 medals were issued in bronze (from a total of 11900 that were 
issued since its institution).
