Scarce example, maker marked "S" (Scharfenberg ,
Dresden).
Mounted on large bar, on genuine ribbon similar
to the correct one - yet wrong!!
The Cross was instituted in 1915 by King Friedrich
August III.
It was awarded as a recognition of outstanding
patriotic activities during the ongoing war.
It was awarded mainly for humanitarian services,
usually to doctors, medics and nurses.
The Cross of War Merit was discontinued in 1918.
