France: WW2 officer's cap badge of the 203rd
Regional Protection Regiment.
Scarce, gilt example for Officers, signed by
Fraisse Demey, Paris on the reverse.
The Regional Regiments were reserve regiments
of the French Army, formed of elderly soldiers
and poorly equipped with WW1 material.
The regiments were mobilized in 1938 during the
Sudetenland Crisis and were responsible for
guarding the rear lines. However, following the
German breakthrough during the Battle of France
in May 1940 the regional troops found themselves
on the front line.
The 203rd Regional Protection Regiment under
the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Michau was
responsible for the Nancy, Toul, Sarrebourg,
Château-Salins area.
It was a light Infantry Regiment, equipped with a
section of obsolete FT tanks.
Following the collapse of the French defense the
Regiment withdrawn to Tournon-d'Agenais.
