FRANCE: Knight in the Order of the Black Star of Dahomey (Benin), in 
its box of issue. Late example (Colonial Wars era). 
On the lid are written details about the recipient (an Officer - 1st Lieutenant), 
the date of the award (1 Dec. 1958) and the official bulletin of publishing.

The Order was instituted in 1889 and was later succeeded by the Order of 
National Merit (in 1969), as the former French Colony of Dahomey became 
a fully independent country in 1960 - and changed its name later on to Benin. 

It was awarded in recognition of faithful services to the French Colonial 
Forces, not only in Dahomey but in all the French Africa  Colonies (Senegal, 
Sudan, Niger, Guinea, Dahomey (Benin) and the Ivory Coast, Congo, Gabon, 
Tchad and Oubangi-Chari)
